TANDBERG
BACKGROUND
Tandberg was established in 1979.It is based in California, although
they are publicly traded on the Norway Stock Exchange. They now have
one of the largest market shares in the DC600 arena, with the data
storage business of Tandberg Data is growing at more than 50% per year.
Their products are positioned as being durable, with the panther 250
providing MTBF of 20,000 hours. This is reflected in their prices,
these being at the higher end of the QIC-150 price spectrum. They have
no intention of moving further up the market, into the DAT market, they
are committed to the QIC format. "Tandberg alone will ship more tape
drives than the whole DAT industry in 1991" - Richard Peters, VP of
marketing. It aims to ship about 250,000 tape drives in 1991.
They offer software solutions, packaging their hardware with Sytos
Plus, Cheyenne Software, ARCserve or Retrospect. Stac's algorithm has
been encorporated into their drives.
TARGET MARKET
Workstations and personal computers in single-user and LAN
environments.
